If a specific page on a site does not load for some reason or if a link is not functioning, the website visitor will see an error page with some generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the site, which may make the visitor leave your site. A solution in cases like this is a feature offered by some hosting service providers - the option to set your own personalized error pages that shall have the exact same design as your site and that can contain any text or images which you want dependent upon the particular error. There are four well-known errors which could occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your browser sends a bad request to the web server and it cannot be processed; 401, in case you are supposed to log in to see a web page, but you have not done this yet; 403, if you do not have a permission to see a specific page; and 404, if a link that you've clicked leads to a file that does not exist. In all of these scenarios, visitors shall be able to see your customized content instead of a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Shared Hosting

You shall be able to set up custom error pages for all of your domains or subdomains. The feature is supported by all shared hosting solutions which we offer, so when you log in to your Hepsia Control Panel and go to the Hosted Domains section, you can easily click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up that will appear, you can choose the kind of error page which should appear - a default one from our system, a conventional Apache server page or a customized one. For the last mentioned alternative, you have to specify the URL to the page, so when you use personalized pages, you need to upload the files inside your hosting account first. An alternative way is to use an .htaccess file placed in the domain or subdomain folder with a line for each error type. The exact syntax can be found in our Knowledge Base, to help you use this function even if you do not have any previous experience.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

All our semi-dedicated servers support custom made error pages, so you will be able to use this feature for each and every domain or subdomain hosted in your account. All it takes to do this is to visit the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia CP, to click the Edit button linked to the specific domain/subdomain and then to input the link to the custom file. You can do this separately for each and every error type. You shall be able to switch back to a generic error page at any time if necessary and the change will take effect straightaway. A different way to achieve the very same result is to put an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder associated with the web site which you want to modify and to type in a few lines of code in it. If you'd like to try this method, you can copy and paste the needed code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, which means that you shall not need any computer programming skills or prior experience.
